Fusion Releases #DearNextPresident Initiative

Fusion recently announced their new initiative with the hashtag #DearNextPresident in an effort to allow Americans to engage with the 2016 presidential candidates. Fusion described their campaign as a “…video series, hashtag campaign, and user-generated social project built around the idea that everyone—especially young voters—should have a voice in telling America’s next president about their most pressing concern or issue going into the next four years.”

The initiative is encouraging young people to take part in politics and address their concerns — but it also shows the growing impact of social media in regards to politics. Many candidates might need to pay more attention to their social media strategies, including Donald Trump, Carly Fiorina, and Bernie Sanders. Politicians may have to go through more social media channels than they did four years ago in order to engage with younger voters, including Snapchat, Vine, and Twitter. Celebrities have also brought awareness to the campaign, with Salma Hayek, Kristen Bell and Rachel Bilson all appearing in spots that will run on Fusion TV and various social media platforms.

Fusion began creating buzz by visiting a number of cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Miami — and asked a diverse range of people to complete the phrase “Dear Next President…” Some of the best responses are collected in the video below.

Through this campaign, Fusion has been able to discern which issues are the most prevalent in the minds of young people — including but not limited to student debt, reproductive rights, college costs and the environment.
